Mental Health Experts Share Tips To Cope With The Holiday Blues

HOUSTON For many people, the holidays are a time for family and gatherings. But for some, this can be a difficult time for those dealing with loneliness or the loss of a loved one.

“The reality is that there are many other stressors,” the doctor said. Luis Fernandez-Vish, a psychiatrist at UTHealth Houston. "It's very normal. I don't think people talk about it. It's a little awkward to express any complaints when maybe you should be happy."

Despite the happy atmosphere, mental health campaigner Heather Lothering said moments like these can lead to isolation, sadness and grief.

“This will be the time when people will spend money. You can't talk about this. People might not come,” Lottering said.

Mental health experts suggest talking about your feelings with someone you trust, feeling sorry for yourself and creating new traditions to combat the holiday blues.

“There are times when we are alone, but when we are surrounded by loved ones, we have memories of the past,” Fernandez-Visch said.

For those who feel overwhelmed with family during the holidays, Dr. Fernandez-Vish suggests taking time for yourself.

“Saying no helps set boundaries. “Yes, I attend these dinners at this time, but I need to leave, go home, do some things,” says the doctor. Fernandez-Vish.

Psychiatrists also recommend taking time to go outside and do something to distract yourself.

“Exercising at certain times of the day helps because it releases certain neurochemicals in the brain that allow us to plan better,” the doctor said. Fernandez-Vish.

Above all, mental health professionals, remember that you are not alone.

"So we want people to know that this is a real feeling and it can't be ignored," Lottering said.
