  • actor. Last year, David Schweckert twice voted against the Veterans Health Benefits bill.

  • But now he's asking his constituents to subscribe to the benefits of the program.

  • This is the latest example of Republicans pushing for a law they originally opposed.

Last year, Rep. David Schweckert voted not once, but twice against a bill to provide medical benefits to veterans exposed to toxic substances while on duty.

Now the Arizona Republican is asking his voters to sign up for benefits created by the same legislation.

"You don't want to miss this opportunity," Schweikert wrote in an email ballot sent out to voters on Monday, urging Arizona veterans to sign up by Wednesday, August 9, for an additional year of benefits.

Schweikert also posted similar messages on Twitter and Facebook.

The bill, known as the Respect Our PDLAA Act, was a bipartisan bill that limited the benefits and services the VA could provide to military personnel who could become ill as a result of exposure to toxins, and it has been expanded.

These include "burning pits" at military bases, where the military disposed of chemical, plastic and human waste using open flames.

President Joe Biden, who blamed burn pit exposure on his late son Beau's brain cancer, called on Congress to pass the bill during his first State of the Union address in 2022.

The original version of the law was then passed by the House of Representatives in March 2022, and the amended version was again passed by the Senate in July 2022.

However, Schweikert was among the Republicans who voted against the bill. Biden later signed the law on August 10, 2022.

Insider reached out to Schweikert's office for comment on why he does not support the bill, but has not received a response.

There are over 41,000 veterans in the Scottsdale area of Schweikert, according to the US Census.

This is the latest example of Republican lawmakers pushing for programs created under legislation they voted against.

June sep. Alabama's Tommy Tuberville celebrated his term by receiving $1.4 billion in federal funding to expand broadband Internet access, despite voting against the bipartisan Infrastructure Act that provided the money for the program.

At the time, his spokesman told Insider that while Tuberville believes the law involves wasteful spending, his state now deserves its "fair share" and that Tuberville is "proud to support this funding going to Alabama."
