Taking care of your mental health should always be a priority, no matter the season. Over the summer I was on a roller coaster of emotions with mixed periods of low anxiety and high stress depending on our plans. Fortunately, I'm not the only one who feels out of control in June, July and August. According to experts, some people experience increased anxiety and panic attacks due to sleep disturbances, worry about the weather, and the need to make the most of the summer months.

How can I improve my mental health this summer?

There is nothing worse than missing out on a great summer experience due to poor mental health. For example, why am I always tense the days before a trip? Even if a gathering of a family of five is chaotic, there's no reason the spillover should spill over to the party itself. The solution is to let your emotions fall into place. Holidays should be fun, but don't load them with stress and anxiety!

8 Summer Mental Health Self-Care Tips

This summer, I am looking for ways to stay calm so that I can fully enjoy the memories with my family. Good mental health begins with a conscious effort to take care of yourself, inside and out. Here are 8 ways to improve and maintain your mental health through self-care from June to August.

Keep hydrated. Did you know that dehydration causes stress? And when your body is under stress, the result is depression and anxiety, so drink ALL the water this summer.

Feel the sun shining on your face (for a few minutes). Even if it's hot and muggy outside, be sure to go outside in the summer. Sun exposure helps increase serotonin levels (a hormone that regulates our mood). Don't forget the sunscreen and limit your time outdoors between 10:00 and 14:00 when the sun's rays are strongest.

Keep your sleeping area cool so you can get a good night's sleep! If you don't have air conditioning, place a fan next to your bed or an ice pack under your pillow. Another tip: take a cold shower before going to bed!

Create a summer playlist of your favorite fun songs. Get a new book from the library. Music and literature can reduce the level of stress in the brain!

Spend time off of social media. Sign up to avoid negative addiction to technology.

Limit your intake of alcohol and spicy foods. Hangovers are not always associated with alcohol – foods high in fat/sugar can make you sick!

Wear clothes that make you feel good, not what you think you should wear. Don't you like bikinis? Do not use it. Hate shorts? Do not use it. Bad clothes can spoil a good mood!

Make an appointment with a mental health specialist. If you're feeling anxious, stressed, depressed, sad, or just not feeling well, don't hesitate to see a therapist. Therapy is completely normal and can be life changing for the better.
