Theory Of Mind As An Emergent Property Of Generative AI Could Be A Linchpin For AIPowered Mental Health Advisement Apps

In today's column, I will discuss the enduring and intriguing topic known as theory of mind (ToM), including how the topic relates to artificial intelligence (AI), such as AI-based mental health counseling applications. It is part of my ongoing in-depth articles on Generative AI or Large Language Models (LLM) that can be used for mental health guidance or counseling.

Before we discuss today's specific topic, I want to give you a quick update so you have some important context on the growing use of creative AI for mental health counseling. I've mentioned it in previous articles and I think context settings are generally important.

The use of creative artificial intelligence to treat mental disorders is an emerging field with important societal implications. We are seeing creative artificial intelligence widely deployed to provide mental health counseling on a large scale, but little is known about whether it is beneficial to humanity or, conversely, harmful to humanity.

Some positively argue that we are democratizing mental health treatment with the introduction of low-cost, always-on, AI-based mental health apps. Others strongly condemn that we are subjecting ourselves to a global and unnecessary experiment in which we are the guinea pigs. Will these creative AI-powered mental health apps lead people to ways that harm their mental health? Will people delude themselves into thinking they are getting good mental health counseling and therefore reject treatment from human therapists and rely on AI that sometimes doesn't provide clear results for improving mental health?
