Health Benefits Of Tea As One Cup A Day Could Cut Risk Of Diabetes By A Quarter
People who drink a cup of tea a day are 28% less likely to develop type 2 diabetes than non-drinkers, according to a new study.
Drinking a cup of tea a day also reduces the risk of prediabetes by 15% because the hot drink increases the excretion of glucose in the urine, which can increase insulin resistance and allow the body to better control blood sugar levels.
1,923 adults living in China participated in the study. Almost a quarter of the participants (436) had diabetes, 352 had prediabetes, and 1,135 had normal blood sugar.
"Several studies have shown significant health benefits of tea in recent years, including reduced risk of cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes, but the mechanisms underlying these benefits remain unclear," said Associate Professor Tongzhi Wu from the University of Adelaide.
"Our results show that regular tea consumption has a protective effect on blood sugar control by increasing urinary glucose excretion, improving insulin resistance and thus providing better blood sugar control." These benefits were more pronounced in those who drank black tea daily.

Black tea is like black tea. It comes from China and is an aged tea that has gone through a second fermentation process.
Although black tea is not commonly used in the UK, regular black and herbal teas also have many benefits.
Improve blood pressure
According to a 2023 study, green and black tea are associated with lower high and systolic blood pressure.
Reduce the risk of developing diabetes
Now that we know that black tea can prevent diabetes, the same can be said about drinking green tea. Green tea polyphenols can inhibit digestive enzymes such as lactase and delay sugar absorption.
Improve gut health
Polyphenols, such as those found in tea, are among the best antioxidants in the human diet. These polyphenols are absorbed only after entering the large intestine and therefore serve as fuel for the beneficial bacteria in our intestines.
Reduce the risk of developing cancer
Research has shown that the polyphenols found in black tea can help prevent the development of various types of cancer thanks to the antioxidants it contains.
Reduce stress and anxiety
Tea contains the amino acid L-theanine, which can boost mental health and help people with chronic stress.
Supporting bone health
Research has shown that green tea, in particular, can help prevent osteoporosis because of the bioactive compounds it contains that can ease bone loss.
Reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases
Green tea and black tea are also associated with a reduced risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD), such as heart disease or stroke.
Strengthening the immune system
Studies have shown that drinking tea can improve metabolism, strengthen the immune system, and fight inflammation.
