Work Environment Affects Quality Of Healthcare In Hospitals

A study confirmed the existence of a positive relationship between evaluation of the working environment and the quality of services provided to patients.

This study highlights the impact of nurses' work environment in hospitals and its influence on the quality of patient care in the healthcare system of the Sultanate of Oman.

Sulaiman al Sabai from the Faculty of Nursing at Sultan Qaboos University conducted this research to determine the relationship between the working environment, patient health and safety and the quality of hospital services. This study included 12 public hospitals and six private hospitals in different regions and provinces, involving 2,403 nurses and 1,800 patients.

The results show that 97.9%, or approximately 2,034 nurses, rated their work environment as a perfect work environment. There is a positive and direct relationship between the evaluation of the working environment and the quality of services provided to patients. An appropriate work environment contributes to the provision of quality care.

The results also show an inverse relationship between the work environment and hazards that threaten patient safety. When the work environment is appropriate and characterized by the availability of a sufficient number of nurses in each department, management support and appropriate mechanisms for developing staff professionalism, it is associated with a decrease in medical illnesses. or treatment errors, a decrease in the number of patient falls and the spread of viral and bacterial infections.

The study recommends increasing the number of nursing staff in health facilities at the state and private levels and establishing clear mechanisms for the professional development of employees. In addition to creating a system with appropriate indicators to assess the quality of services provided to patients and the level of safety during hospitalization, the importance of comparing quality and health indicators of patients is also highlighted, since their safety is in line with global standards.

Developing a healthy and supportive work environment is critical to ensuring patient safety. Nurses should strive to improve the work environment by creating a culture that values interprofessional teamwork and collaborative relationships.

Effective communication in healthcare organizations.
