Woman Finds 'horrific' Congratulatory Card For Weight Loss At CVS: 'Imagine Receiving This'
With the advent of weight loss drugs like Ozempic, conversations about the effects of weight loss and the language we use to talk about our bodies have become more common.
There has been more talk about how to “properly” acknowledge a person's weight loss and whether or not it should be done. Some people may want others to admit they've lost weight, but don't assume that this is always the case.
While there's no easy way to lose weight, Intuitive Eating and Body Image Coach Alex Joy Pucci (@alexjoypucci) believes there's a wrong way.
Pucci said she recently came across a slimming board at a local CVS and the influencer wasn't too impressed.
Tweeting on TikTok with the caption "I'M COMING 100 THINGS THAT DO NOT EXIST," Pucci tweeted, "Take it!" on the faceplate and with the scale's description "Hooray!" where the numbers go is written.
CVS did not respond to In The Know by Yahoo's request for comment.
Pucci says it's one thing to acknowledge a person's health efforts, but focusing on weight isn't the best place for open praise.
"Can't it be?" signed his video. "The number on the scale is arbitrary and doesn't define you, period. Great victories where they are!”
Despite Pucci's clear opinion on the card, reactions in the comments section were mixed, even from people who have lost a lot of weight. Some said they would appreciate it if someone admitted they're trying to lose weight, while others said a note like Pucci's would make them "cry".
"I've lost over 100 pounds and a card like this would drive me nuts it's awful," wrote @itstaybaby_.
“Imagine getting that. I would cry, not with joy," added @paigecaroline92.
Others disagreed, saying they would appreciate a card that recognized their hard work.
"I think that's great. I would love to get a card that recognizes my hard work in losing weight," said @annathemama94.
"I would love it if someone gave it to me??? How would I appreciate it after working so hard," added @menosmena.
"For someone who loves exercising with family and friends and supports my healthy lifestyle, THIS is AWESOME!" @certificatokarenn said.
TikTok user @candidlyab pointed out that card speed might increase when Pucci opens the greeting card section since there is only one person left in the stack. However, some commenters have also pointed to the danger of contesting a person's weight loss, since you never know exactly what's behind the weight loss and whether or not the person who lost the weight thinks the change in numbers is a good thing.
"My colleague gave me the same card three years ago after I was diagnosed with an autoimmune disease that caused me to lose over 50 pounds," @eb.choi wrote, adding, "He didn't know I was ill . But I think the point is that you can't help anyone on their way. If you haven't received an invitation, you shouldn't make any assumptions.”
