Kalamazoo County Program Providing Free Prescription Discount Cards

KALAMAZOO, Mich. -- Kalamazoo County announced plans to continue its partnership with the National Prescription Discount Card Association so members of the community don't have to pay full price for their medications.

Christina Anthony, public information manager for Kalamazoo County Health and Community Services, explains, "If you normally show your prescription when you pick it up, you'll save up to 80% on generic drugs and up to 40% on branded drugs right away."

The Kalamazoo County program offers free prescription drug discount cards

The program offers residents free discount cards for purchasing prescription drugs. This card relieves those who are uninsured or underinsured.

There are no age or income requirements, no health restrictions, and no forms to fill out.

Community members can use discount cards to create their own recipes, recipes for family members, and even for their pets.

According to United Way's ALICE report, released in April, 56% of households in Kalamazoo are considered financially insecure. Anthony says this prescription drug discount card can make a big difference for some families.

"These non-medical factors can impair the ability to achieve equitable health outcomes compared to other members of the community," he said. I'm interested."

Many people living in Kalamazoo County, including Toya Williams, who recently heard about the program, said the additional savings are significant.

Williams said she faces a prescription bill of more than $4,000 and is waiting to see how much her insurance will cover.

"I would say they cover about 90% of my prescriptions," he said. "It was a long wait because it's my second script. You only treat it once.”

He said the cost was high even after the insurance. She and her husband are definitely planning to use the discount card for an extra boost.

Williams said: "We have to do what we have to do, no matter what. Will that slow us down? Maybe, but as he says, my life is more important than anything.”

Prescription drug discount cards are free for anyone living in Kalamazoo County. It's free and doesn't require an app.
