Health Expert Dr Michael Mosley Shares Two Tips For Avoiding Osteoporosis
"Health Guru" Dr. Michael Mosley advises people who want to reduce their risk of developing osteoporosis, which is characterized by weak or brittle bones.
The board-certified and former physician is known for his regular appearances on The One Show and on health and medical television programs.
In a column for MailOnline , the creator of the 5:2 diet and Fast800 revealed his legs weren't as strong as they could be while filming the 2022 series Healthy Ageing.
"Like many Brits, my legs are weaker than they should be," he wrote. “Last year, while filming a TV series about healthy ageing, I had a DXA scan, which uses low doses of X-rays to see how dense (or strong) your bones are. ).
"Although my spine is strong, I don't have osteoporosis, but my hip bones are not very good."
Dr. Moseley explains that the key to preventing osteoporosis is a healthy diet rich in calcium and vitamin D and short but effective daily exercises.
"Plus, you can naturally add good sources of calcium like milk and green leafy vegetables and prunes," he suggests.
A study published last October in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that eating five to six prunes a day improved bone strength in 235 older women. The theory is that the anti-inflammatory compounds in prunes may slow bone fractures.
Daily exercise can also help: one study found that jogging for two minutes a day can improve hip strength.
As Doctor Appearing before a Channel 4 series in 2020 to help people who have put on weight while adjusting, Mosley said men were more likely to be "cheated on" than women.
He told the Press Association : "Scary people don't realize how much weight they're putting on, especially in the abdominal area.
Research shows that only 10% of obese people are aware of it, but only 7% of men, Dr. Mosley said.
He also denied that the show, which gives viewers practical advice on how to improve their lifestyles, is about fat shaming: "Body shaming is terrible. Incredibly ineffective. Telling people they're fat never works.
"It's not all about fat shaming. It's about helping people who are overweight and want to do something about it. Any diet only works if a person chooses to follow it.
