LVHN Health Tips: Does Your Child Know Their Dog Manners?

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), more than 4.5 million people in the United States are bitten by dogs each year, and 1 in 5 people need medical attention.
At least half of dog bite victims are children. Children are not the only victims of dog bites, but they are also more likely to suffer serious injuries.
While we cannot always control dogs and their owners, we can teach our children how to handle and interact with dogs to reduce the risk of dog bites.

When the dog says hello
Teach them to follow these steps:
1. Ask the dog's owner for permission. Even if you know the dog, it is never appropriate to approach or pet the dog without first asking the owner.
2. Approach the dog calmly and slowly.
3. Let the dog see and feel your hand before your pets. To do this safely, hold your arm down and fully bend or straighten your arm.
4. After the dog sniffs your hand, stroke the dog's neck, chest and sides gently.
Avoid massaging the upper part of the head or tail.
When an unfamiliar dog approaches
If your child is approached by a dog they don't know, they should stay until the dog leaves or until an adult can help them. Also, they should avoid looking the dog directly in the eyes.
Emphasize the importance of keeping your child as calm as possible.
If a dog knocks your child over, roll into a ball, cover their face and neck, and wait until the dog is gone.
If the dog tries to bite your child, you should put everything between him and the dog.
What to do if a dog bites a child?
If a dog bites a child, seek medical attention immediately.
Try to get the following information to help the clinic understand the risk of infection and the treatment your child needs.
• Your child's immunization status and medical history
• Name and location of dog owner
• If the dog is up to date with its vaccinations
• Whether the attack is provoked (eg approaching the dog while eating) or unprovoked. Knowing that an attack has not occurred alerts the doctor that the dog may be sick, which can guide treatment decisions.
