Health Insurance Covers 80% Cancer Treatment NHIA DG

The Chief Executive Officer of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), Professor Mohammed Sambo, said the new NHIA law has expanded the coverage of cancer treatment.

He said the new law and partnerships with Roche and other pharmaceutical companies have saved patients 80% of the cost of cancer treatment.

He made the statement yesterday in Abuja during a workshop on NHIA for speakers from various Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs).

Samba said some aspects of cancer treatment are covered by the old NHIS but people are not aware of it.

Represented by Jonathan Ekeh, Head of Formal Sector Programme, NHIA, he said the reforms are being made to ensure that all Nigerians, irrespective of their socio-economic status, have access to quality health services without facing difficulties in paying for them. He said the new NHIA Act, signed into law by former President Muhammadu Buhari on May 19, 2022, makes health insurance compulsory for all Nigerians.

"Policy is being developed and will include whether to pay providers directly, and people may no longer need to get codes from health maintenance organizations (HMOs)," he said.

The CEO said the NHIA would soon launch its branded drugs to help dispel misconceptions among members about generic drugs and ensure access to safe and quality drugs.
