Bloomington, Minn. As the nation nears the end of the pandemic, the US Surgeon General says Americans are suffering from an epidemic: loneliness.

The problem is beyond our comprehension. Why is loneliness bad for our health? How do we help ourselves and others?

Informal yet competitive, Bridge leads the club's people into a competition where results are not the priority.

"It's exciting," said Kathleen Boraleo. "It's life or death," Dave Klivan protested, laughing at Berglio. "I mean we're going to kill."

They were at the Minnesota Gopher Big Bridge Regional Tournament at a hotel in Bloomington this week.

The feeling they had meeting their friends at the weekly Bridge Club matches was echoed by the camaraderie they shared during the interviews. It's the human connection that many in the competition don't take for granted.

"Unfortunately, we have a lot of widows," Jane Schoening said of the Bridge Club. Our girlfriends are very important to us.

"He mentally saved me when the bridge was closed."

Her husband fell ill at the beginning of the outbreak. His main contact with the outside world was playing bridge online with his friends.

He and many other bridge players are excited to be playing in person again. Playing together helps combat loneliness, which can affect us.

The US Surgeon General reports that loneliness and social isolation increase the risk of cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, and cognitive decline.

"It gets boring, and after it gets boring enough, it gets frustrating," Klevan said.

However, wanting to be alone does not mean being alone. It is about self-awareness.

“We all deal with loneliness differently, and I think I enjoy being busy,” says bridge player Adele Brinnentine.

The Bridge Club, in addition to simple activities like bingo, helps keep Bralentin' in the community. Connecting with others through hobbies, exercise, and other group activities can enhance a sense of belonging.

Other tips for dealing with loneliness include minimizing distractions, such as putting your phone away when interacting with deep connections. Service to others, such as volunteering or helping a friend, creates connection and fulfillment.

If you're feeling lonely, asking a friend or family member out can be a good way to break the ice, according to Dr. Dacuzzi.
