With Black History Month just days away, hundreds of people gathered at The Venue at Westwind in North Little Rock for the 19th Annual UAMS Midsouth Black Expo.
Vent leaders used the day to attract many businesses and organizations to further help the community.
On Saturday, 100 stalls were set up, each selling a goal.
"It's just a day for health, education and awareness," said Teresa Timmons, co-founder of the Expo.
He said when he started the event 19 years ago, he envisioned a day when organizations could come together.
"Our participation shows that we are beginning to understand the importance of our health," Timmons said. "We are starting to understand the importance of community and working together."
This year's theme is "Our Health, Our Wealth, Our Culture".
UAMS was there to focus on cancer screenings, such as prostate and colorectal.
"This state has an underprivileged population," said Michael Bearer of UAMS. "We need to provide cancer awareness and prevention."
The state's largest hospital is working to see how it can help these communities.
"I hope we leave with a better idea of what gaps and barriers we need to overcome to really help the arcana," Bearer said.
One of the ways Davenport is working with Southern Bankcorp in Kenya is to help Arkansas give people greater access to financial resources.
“We are trying to target African Americans, especially people of color who have traditionally been excluded from the financial industry,” Davenport said.
He said the areas south of Interstate 630 in Little Rock are coastal wilderness.
Hope to change that.
"We're trying to provide access to places that are bank deserts, places that other banks might go," Davenport said.
Each vendor hopes that the hundreds of people who will come on Saturday will receive important information that can improve their health and well-being.
