Participating In 'Dry January' Can Have Health Benefits

Dry January is underway. This is an opportunity for the social drinker to cut down on alcohol in one month.
Medical experts say that dry January has many health benefits.
d Jacob Denington, MD, a family physician at the Austin Diagnostic Clinic, added: "Suddenly, instead of having two or three crashes, you can be happy with one, which is good for reducing the toxins in your body. Reduce calories and therefore lose weight. And so on.
Chris Marshall is the founder of East Austin's Sans Pub, an alcohol-free bar.
"All the non-alcoholic drinks - the drinks we make here are the best," Marshall said. "She's fun. She's mature, but she's not an alcoholic."
Marshall, who has been sober for 16 years, said he wants to create an environment where alcohol is not required for fun.
"It's like any other bar in America. Glasses are clinking. People are talking and you hear someone shaking a cocktail," he said. "It's a place where people really meet each other."
Marshall thinks Dry January is a great way to start the new year and has the benefits of cutting back on alcohol.
"If we can reduce the unhealthy things we put in our bodies, it will be much better," he said. "Again, if you only have the weekend, that's a good thing."
Medical professionals encourage people with serious drinking problems to seek medical help before making any major changes.
