Tips For A Safe, Healthy Halloween
(CNN) -- Many kids will be doing tricks on Monday, but experts say they should do what they can to keep themselves safe before heading out for a night of fun.
It's time for carved pumpkins, costumes and candy, but make sure your child has a good meal, Dr. Natalie Tony, pediatrician at Arnold Palmer Children's Hospital in Orlando.
"Something like a prank that makes them eat candy all night, but doesn't make them want to eat candy all night," Tony said.
Drinking water during a trick or treat can help ghosts and goblins stay hydrated. As for their clothing, make sure it fits snugly so you don't trip over it.
If there is a mask, make sure they can see well. Use a flashlight or reflective tape so children can easily see others.
“The real key is making sure your child is visible from the side of the car, so anything shiny is cool,” Tony said.
Eat at home in well-lit areas that are clearly open to visitors.
A good habit, Tony says, is to wait for delicious food.
"If your child brings candy home, it's always a good idea to have an adult look at it and make sure everything is in commercial packaging and safe to consume," she said.
And when it comes to treats, plan ahead for how much they can eat.
"You'll probably be able to eat a few more sweets than usual, but make sure you save a lot of sweets over the next few weeks by eating them in moderation," Tony says.
Pediatricians say young children should be accompanied by adults during stunts or procedures. For teens walking without parents, please be sure to stay at home and follow the path they are on for the safety of pedestrians.
