It can promote thyroid health
"Your thyroid gland [a small gland at the base of your neck] needs iodine to make thyroid hormones," says Dr. Lam. Although iodine deficiency has been virtually eliminated in the United States with the introduction of iodized salt, even a small deficiency can have negative effects on the thyroid gland.
In the marine environment, algae are the main supplier of iodine. However, iodine content varies between species, with brown algae generally containing more iodine than green and red algae. Specifically, seaweed contained an average of 3.86 ± 1.49 mg of iodine per kilogram of dry weight.
According to the National Institutes of Health, most adults need about 150 micrograms of iodine per day, while pregnant and lactating women need slightly more at 220 micrograms and 290 micrograms, respectively.
It can support gut health
An unhealthy gut has an imbalance of gut bacteria. This gut imbalance or dysbiosis is associated with conditions such as inflammatory bowel disease, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure and cancer.
Prebiotics are a group of digestion-resistant fibers. They help stimulate the growth and/or activity of "good bacteria" in the gut.
A review of studies on the effects of algae (including algae) in humans, animals, and in vitro (microorganisms) in general indicates that certain components unique to algae may act as prebiotics and support gut health. The review authors note that while these studies show the prebiotic potential of algal ingredients, large-scale human clinical trials are needed to confirm the results.

A small 2018 observational study examined the effects of algae supplementation on 80 patients with musculoskeletal disorders and joint symptoms. Subjects taking different seaweed supplements were divided into two groups.
Some study participants in both groups reported positive effects such as increased strength and energy, as well as reduced fatigue and pain after additional treatment. The researchers concluded that this could be due to the algae's high protein content. Specifically, those who received the high-protein algae supplement regained more muscle strength.
Additional health benefits from algae
Algae have other potential health benefits. However, since these benefits have only been observed in animal and laboratory studies, further human clinical studies are needed.

- Worms treated with seaweed extract showed an improved immune response.
