5 Tips For Staying Active Outdoors During The Cold Winter Months From A Doctor

It is winter in most parts of the country and the cold makes it difficult to go outside and get fresh air.

Millions of Americans prefer to exercise outdoors, which becomes difficult when the temperature drops.

Alexis Colvin, MD, professor of orthopedics at Mount Sinai Health System in New York. They shared with Fox News Digital tips for continuing to exercise outdoors, even in the winter.

1. Dress properly

"Layers for winter activities help to adjust the changes in body temperature when you are warm, control moisture when you sweat and protect you from wind, snow, rain and cold," he explains.

According to an orthopedic surgeon who specializes in knee, shoulder and hip disorders, the first layer of clothing should be a moisture-wicking material, followed by a protective middle layer and a 'windproof and waterproof outer layer.

He also pointed out that those who prefer to exercise outdoors in cold weather should use hand and leg warmers.

"These places lose heat first," he said.

2. Be careful with the weather

Colvin Pay attention to the weather and be careful when it's very cold outside, especially if you have asthma.

He said cold weather can sometimes trigger asthma attacks, putting people who like to exercise outdoors at risk.

"To prevent this, roll in and cover your nose and mouth with a duster, scarf or mask," he said.

Colvin recommends taking a day off if it's too cold or muggy nearby.

3. Warming at home

Colvin says it's important to make sure your body is warmed up and ready to exert more energy before you leave the house.

"A 10- to 15-minute dynamic warm-up is important to prepare the body before going out to practice," he explains.

Colvin, the medical director of the US Open, gave examples of simple exercises that "activate large muscle groups and increase heart rate," such as arm curls, squats and jumping jacks.

Doctors also recommend trying something new this summer.

4. Go for a walk

"If you're having trouble finding the motivation to do a full workout, walk more," she says.

If you live in a cold place where there is a lot of snow, doctors recommend to try using nutrients.

Take the opportunity to try a new sport, such as cross-country or downhill skiing, skiing or snowboarding.

"Or a competitive snowball fight!" He added.

5. Wear proper shoes

Colvin's fifth piece of advice is to make sure you're prepared in terms of footwear if you choose to do any outdoor sport.

"Shoes with good traction are essential to prevent injury on icy surfaces," he said.

It's also important to be careful when crossing slippery sidewalks, stairs or paths, Colvin said.
