Billionaire's Pledge To Give Away Most Of Her Wealth Benefits Another Iowa Nonprofit
Mackenzie Scott's charity Yield Giving has donated $5 million to Siouxland Community Health Center in Sioux City. Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos' ex-wife Scott has pledged to donate more than half of his billions to charity in 2019 after his divorce.
The executive director of Mary Captain Dale said the gift was a surprise. He received a call about the award for the first time a month ago, and it was officially announced on November 1.
Captain Dahlin said the task force will help determine how the money will be spent because the center wants to be "very careful and careful" about how donations are used to best help the people the center serves.
"Because there are no restrictions on that, we don't have to report annually, we don't have to report on how we use the money. We need to be responsible and careful and really plan how we can use this for the benefit of our society.
Each year, approximately 35,000 patients visit the health center's three locations for a wide range of medical and behavioral services. Of those, 80% are between 100% and 200% of the federal poverty level, and 17% are uninsured, Capt. Dallin said.
"Last year, 52 different languages were spoken at the health center, which shows the diversity of the people we serve," she said. “A lot of them are obviously new to the country and people are just starting out and needing. are our resources".
Yield Giving said it selects the health center based on several characteristics: strong leadership, focused vision, measurable long-term success, community impact and stable or growing resources.
"We are very grateful for everything he has done for our organization."Mary Captain Dahlen, Executive Director, Seaucland Community Health Center
"We are very grateful to [Scott] for everything he has done for our organization and the recognition they have for their business," Captain-Dahlin said.
Other Iowa nonprofits have also benefited from the donations. In recent years, more than $14 billion has been donated to more than 1,600 organizations, including Big Brothers and Sisters of Central Iowa, the Heartland and the Quad Cities YWCA.
