Nia Vardalos Claims Her WGA Health Insurance Was Canceled During Strike: ‘Yours Too I Bet
Nia Vardalos claims her health insurance from the Writers Guild of America was canceled due to the ongoing strike.
The creator and star of the "My Big Greek Wedding" series took to Instagram on Thursday (September 21) to share with her followers and WGA friends what she believes are the same issues.
“The Writers Union insurance was just canceled. I’m sure you do too,” Vardalos, 60, captioned the post, which included a giant confused face emoji. “Hey @wgawest maybe you want to give us an extension while we all cross the strike line. Thank you. Edit: And let’s help raise donations for those in need 💰”.
Vardalos, writer and star of My Big Greek Wedding 3, which aired earlier this month, explained the alleged insurance claim in the comments section.
"There are many writers whose families are in the same situation and @wgawest had to extend all of them while he was on vacation," he explained to a fan. "The amount of a filmmaker's fee has sanitary limits, but the higher the price, the more higher the annual fee. I got money for the script in 2019 and 2020, but because of the pandemic I shot it in 2022. When the movie comes out and we go on vacation, @wgawest decides to give up on healthcare.
Additionally, the actress claims that health insurance for her and her daughter through COBRA costs her "$1,900 per month."
“Imagine how some writers who have families are suffering now,” said Vardalos, who has a daughter, Ilaria, with his ex-husband Jan Gomez .
Vardalos' post comes a day after the picket, with Octavia Spencer sharing a photo of them on the WGA picket line via Instagram on Thursday.
Spencer, 53, wrote: “Thank you @niavardalos for being with me yesterday. It was nice to do something to promote this cause." "I'm also happy to hear that discussions with #WGA are going well. Let's end this nationwide strike by paying the workers, the autoworkers, the actors and the writers. #StrongUnion".
Vardalos commented on the article, echoing Spencer's sentiments. “I love you @octaviaspencer and will accompany you everywhere from the batting line to the @target for my favorite panties. Yes, let’s give all union members, automakers, crew, writers and actors fair wages and get back to work ❤️.”
The WGA has been on strike since the end of May against the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) because it is demanding higher wages from streaming services. The Screen Actors Guild of America and the Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) joined a strike against AMPTP in July over similar issues. The two strikes resulted in dozens of television shows and films being postponed.
Us Weekly has reached out to the Writers Guild of America for comment.
