Onethird Of Americans Rate Health, Wellbeing Benefits Second Only To Compensation When Choosing A Job
CHICAGO-(BUSINESS WIRE)--November 30, 2022--
LifeWorks, a leading provider of comprehensive personal and digital health solutions sponsored by TELUS Health, released its monthly Mental Health Index™ and found benefits and flexibility to be key factors in choosing a workplace.
The index showed that the mental health of American workers is still significantly strained.
- The Mental Health Index™ October 2022 score is 69.9 out of 100, which is slightly lower than the September 2021 score of 70.2 but higher than the October 2021 score of 69.0.
- Full-time higher education students have the lowest mental health scores for the fifth consecutive month.
- Down 1.1 points, financial risk reduction suffered its largest decline since September, although none of the sub-points measured improved.
After salary, benefits and flexibility are the most important factors in choosing an employer.
- 33% say health and wellness benefits and services are the most important factors when choosing an employer.
- 29% say flexibility is the most important factor
- 21% say the type of work is most important
- 12% would choose an employer with a positive work culture.
Employees who find it necessary to prioritize mental health resilience score lower than those who select other key decision factors, while employees who focus on the type of job have higher scores.
The leadership qualities of managers greatly affect the mental health of employees
- In five key areas (self-confidence, charisma, humanity, commitment, and team orientation) employees who consider their manager to be strong have better psychological health than those who consider their manager to be poor.
- Employees who care about their work (87 percent) and those who strive to exceed expectations (82 percent) score two points above the national average. Almost everyone who works with charismatic and independent leaders falls into this category.
- Americans who rate their manager low in each of the five categories are 2.5 times less productive than those who rate their manager highly.
Comments from Michael Dingell, director of health at TELUS
“Health benefits, and mental health benefits in particular, have gained attention and have a measurable impact on employees, their families and the places they choose to work. With the Mental Health Index, business leaders can see the benefits and prioritize other key factors such as flexibility and quality of leadership that are directly related to employee effort, productivity and mental health .
Commentary by Paula Allen, Global Leader at LifeWorks and Vice President of Research and Global Wellness
“Although pandemic-related restrictions have been largely lifted, mental health indicators show a persistent sense of anxiety and isolation among American workers. At the same time, they face new inflationary pressures and the risk of a recession, which hurts overall mental health. Here, we clearly see the impact Workplace leaders on mental health.

About the Mental Health Index™
The LifeWorks Monthly Survey was conducted through an online survey of 5,000 respondents across the United States. All respondents live in the United States and have worked in the past six months. The data are statistically weighted to ensure that the regional, age and sex structure of the sample reflects this population. The Mental Health Index™ has been published monthly since April 2020. Baseline data was collected in 2017, 2018 and 2019.
The Mental Health Index™ is based on a response rating system, which then converts individual responses into points. Higher scores are associated with better mental health and reduced mental health risks. Scores from 0 to 49 correspond to anxiety levels, scores from 50 to 79 correspond to stress levels, and scores from 80 to 100 correspond to optimal levels of mental health.
